Hollywood Legend : The Johnny Duncan Story by Richard Lester (2011, Paperback)
Apr 08, 2016
A True Hollywood Legend
This is an excellent book that really covers this wonderful actors' career in a comprehensive fashion. There are very interesting quotes and stories in the book as related by actor John Duncan. Although Mr. Duncan was often uncredited in many of the films he was in, he really did play a role in many important and pivotal scenes in most of those films. The stories of working with many fine and really great actors is revealed in this book as well. Humphrey Bogart, Burt Lancaster, Ronald Reagan and Marlon Brando are but a few. I had corresponded with Mr. Duncan a few years back after I had ordered some items directly from him and I had relayed to him after recently viewing the movie "The Wild One", that I had noticed him as a motorcycle gang member in the film. Unbelievably, he was uncredited, (if the film came out "nowadays" he definitely would have been credited as actor and technical advisor) and he wrote back to me stating that he taught most of the cast how to properly ride "the bikes" for that picture, to include Marlon Brando! Of course "Johnny" Duncan is probably best known and remembered for his iconic portrayal of Robin "the boy wonder", Batman's sidekick in the 1949 serial "Batman and Robin". Here he plays a Robin that looks a bit older than the actor (Douglas Croft) from the 1943 serial. I always thought that this made sense since Johnny's serial was filmed and released about six years the first serial, which was simply titled "Batman". In the chapters of "Hollywood Legend" that pertain to this release a lot of wonderful and warm stories are revealed concerning Johnny's role in the film and his friendship with his co-star "Batman" Robert Lowery. To me these serials especially the 1949 one, are still the best presentation of Batman and Robin. Looking back at them, they are very refreshing as there is humor, but no "camp", no rubber suits and no CGI. For me, while these films are definitely fantasy pieces, they are in one sense, more realistic I feel, as this might be how things would really look if a couple of real guys (in some assemblance of good shape, and in Johnny's case, great shape) donned costumes and started crime fighting! These serials or films, are really a lot of fun to watch despite the relatively low budgets and so forth and Johnny Duncan and Robert Lowery are only the second actors ever to play Robin and Batman respectively and really give it their all. They are not dark and brooding, they take the mission at hand seriously and it's great to see real actors and stuntmen "duking it out" on top of a train for example and Robin is very resourceful and cunning in these episodes and can take care of himself. Mr. Duncan is also well remembered for his appearances in the "East Side, Bowery Boys" films, in one of which he is really the subject "Million Dollar Kid". Also, stories concerning many of his other film appearances are included in this book to include "low budget B-grade films such as "Plan 9 From Outer Space" right on up to big budget productions like "Spartacus". I highly recommend this book to Johnny Duncan fans, Batman and Robin and fans and really to "film fans" of all kinds, as there really are many great stories as revealed by Mr. Johnny Duncan in this book. This book also is loaded with pictures and reads very smoothly and easily. Please check it out, you won't regret it. Chas E
Ultra Q: The Complete Series [5 Discs] DVD Region 1

"Ultra Q"- Highly recommended!
Picture and sound quality are great and offered at a very reasonable price here. English subtitles are available in this set. For anyone who enjoys Ultraman, Godzilla, Gamera and Kaiju and science fiction/fantasy in general will enjoy this historic and classic series. Many of the familiar actors in the Toho films show up. And the show was created by special effects master Eiji Tsuburaya who was responsible for the Godzilla films, and many other projects including the first "Ultraman" series and "Ultra 7". The stories and plots are real good and thoroughly enjoyable. This series is very unique and many varied themes and variations of characterization are employed in this series. So, if you're looking for something different, yet related to the "Kaiju" genre; look no further than this groundbreaking series, brought to you by Mr. Tsuburaya and his wonderful cast and crew.
