I've had quite a few sales since I've been on eBay and I've never really had a problem. I only hit one little snag because someone had won a bid, then didn't have the money to pay, but I took care of that. I understand that sometimes people think they have a little extra money to spend and come out short.

I really prefer paypal transactions simply because they go a lot smoother.

I don't ship the item until the payment goes through. I have to be paid first. No one likes to be ripped off. :)

I don't do returns at all. I sell all of my items as is and I always say what kind of condition the item is in. After the item is shipped, it's really out of my hands.
