About

I retired long ago from the Superhero trade but in my glory days I once saved the entire Solar system from a mad scientist who had been plotting to blow up the Sun. She's on Prison now, but I still have her wacky contraption out in my garage, and on some mornings (usually before I've had my first cup of coffee) I feel an almost irresistible urge to go out there and push the danged button. Fortunately, my garage is filled with all sorts of other crazy stuff and I'm easily distracted.
I really do need to downsize.

The Conquest of Space Willy Ley 1956 art by C.Bonestell
Jan 01, 2016
Conquest of Space 8th printing 1956
A re-issue of the classic Chesley Bonestell and Willy Ley masterpiece which began whetting the American appetite for space exploration back in 1949. It was reprinted over a dozen times, and each edition was nearly identical except for this, the eighth, published in 1956. What makes this one special is the red cloth cover, commemorating the previous year's very close conjunction of the Earth with "the Red Planet" Mars. Also published by Viking in 1956, and marketed by the publisher in the same campaign, was "The Exploration of Mars," likewise featuring Bonestell's artwork along with Ley's writing, augmented by that of an old friend of Ley's from pre-war German affiliations, Wernher von Braun, the V2 rocket scientist who would soon be spearheading vital aspects the U.S. space program, ultimately landing men on the Moon.

Mr. Moonlight of the South Seas: The Extraordinary life of Robert Dean Frisbie O
Dec 20, 2017
Where (else) has Mr. Moonlight gone?
I think the biographer overindulges with information about himself, but once he gets his focus established he provides many well-researched details and insights into the life of Robert Dean Frisbie, who didn't simply write, but actually lived one of the most interesting stories ever. I was sadly disappointed to find no mention of Frisbie's sailing to San Francisco with Andy Thompson aboard the Tagua in the Spring of 1929 to deliver a load of copra. This is mentioned in none of Frisbie's books either, nor was it ever mentioned by other writers presumably familiar with his doings, from James Norman Hall to James Michener to A. Grove Day, but it was in many of the American newspapers (I have some original press photos which I bought on eBay!) An intriguing omission, the depths of which I hope a future biographer will be able to fathom. In the meantime, this is as good as it gets!
