Manny Aron said...
"Buy this album. It is a great record". The time was 1967, another day of ditching high school and hanging out at Aron's Records, on Melrose, in Los Angeles. Aron's was the best record store, and Manny had impeccable taste (running towards classical) so I eagerly carried it home on his recommendation and gave it a listen. Holy Shit. Absolutely horrible. I could hardly get through it. The next day I brought it back to the store to return it and Manny said "No, take it home and give it another listen." I told him that I hated it and couldn't listen to it again. He insisted. I took it home, gave it a listen. Pure crap. Indecipherable. Thick and Obtuse. Non-musical. I hated it even more. Took it back again the next day, same thing. I wanted to get rid of it so badly and get any number of amazing lp's that he had in the store but he refused to refund my money, told me that I was missing it; someday, I would understand. I stuck the record into my collection and moved on... Every once in a while I'd pull it out and give it a try. With every listen the music worked it's magic a bit more until there it was. I got it. Absolute genius. Canterbury. British prog-rock before it had a name. Multi-instrumentalist virtuosos with a completely original sound. Nobody else sounded liked Caravan. And no one else ever did. Forty years later and I am still listening to it, and looking for another copy, for when my original record wears through to the other side. Give it a chance. It may never grab you, but if and when it does... You'll get it, too.
