Approach to collecting Chinese ceramics
My approach to buying is by first memorizing shapes and designs then colors. I then study museum photographs of the Imperial marks. Also study how items are constructed physically. Are they functional? Do they feel smooth and feel balanced. I then categorize everything into four types of Chinese ceramics. One would be a new piece that may or may not look old. Two is a piece that is definitely old and not imperial but very good quality. Three is an Imperial piece that is old and original but not of the period specified by the Imperial mark on it. Four is an Imperial piece with a mark and of the period. Because there are so many fakes on the market you really will not know if the item is an original until its in-hand. I always try to buy ceramics that I consider are Imperial. Try to aquire your own knowledge. You will have opportunities to buy rare ceramics, just be ready.
Business InformationHistory/background
I grew up learning the antique business from my parents who both dealt in antiques. I learned quite a lot about most general antiques and some about Asian art. I then lived next door to a gentleman for 10 years who really taught me more about the history of Asian porcelain then any one else. He grew up overseas and made high quality porcelain items for sale for most of his life. He really was a Pousa (porcelain god). Although he is very guarded with his knowledge he did share some of it eventually. I also purchased several thousand dollars worth of museum books on Chinese, Japanese and Korean porcelain and jade. If you want knowledge then Museum books with large photographs are your indisputable truth. I then continued my education on Ebay by purchasing new and old ceramics from around the world. If you understand how long a piece took to make and how excellent the artists were who created it then you will have more success in your buying. Study facts and avoid opinions without proof.
