Six Feet Under 4th season
If you've seen Six Feet Under you are familiar with the realism and the drama surrounding the Fisher's and Co. in their world which revolves around the funeral home they own and what happens after the patriarch dies in the very first episode of season one. Life moves fast and there is contentiousness and mental and emotional breakdowns and periods of transition handled well and not so well amongst the characters involved. One who is cracking up is later doing fairly well as a more stable character is finding sympathy where they once mocked or condescended as they deal with their own druthers. The drama continues in this season but when David gets high-jacked by a true sicko, well, let's just say it tops or competes with any of the freaky stuff that has come before. In a jaded viewers eyes, in reality and what has been depicted in movies and cable T.V. this stuff is not for the weak of heart or stomach. But for any who think this is just shock for shock values sake they are so wrong...it is story driven, character driven and the situations are extremely realistic without any pretense of right and wrong. There's something here to offend just about anyone. I fast forward or close my eyes during the more GAY moments of affection. If you can't handle the reality of dead bodies being prepped for viewing...well, I don't think that one could appreciate the magnificent acting, lighting, and cutting between characters and scenarios of what is actually happening and what is happening inside of the characters minds. Never has the juxtaposition of a moment alone or amongst a crowd and the thoughts or images inside of one or many of the character's heads been so vivid and segued with such ease of lighting, sound and silence and then reflect to a standstill. This isn't something to watch if you can't pay attention. You would or could still get a lot out of it. But the strength of this show,(And the fourth season is no exception.) is not only the dramatic episodes but in revealing the depth of the flaws that permeate each character as they wrestle with some of life's, or the afterlife's most difficult struggles. This is truly ground breaking Cable TV...but if you are not open to the content, (Let's face it, every show starts with a death.)the setting is in a funeral home. Etc., etc., I would think that if you knew someone who could not stomach this you could view an episode together with a friend or loved one and fast forward through some of the more graphic parts or language and find yourselves talking about subjects revolving around life and death.Despite the drama and distress these are real people too. I know there were attempts to do a show or show(s) like this-I.E.Dead Like Me, etc. but they just couldn't hold a candle to the many elements that made Six Feet Under so darn special. I've hardly mentioned one characters name or any relationships. And while I believe some received some accolades, and some characters came and went as the main characters revolving around the funeral home stayed...it was the real life ensemble, the realism, along with the great cinematography, etc, etc. that made this show so cutting edge and brought its viewers a true vehicle to vicariously live through these stories and characters. Almost an out of body experience grounded by the reality; the juxtaposition of life and death. Bravo to its creator and the cast and crew. Bravo. Richard Windrose antrygis@embarqmail.com
