The Warmen's Civil War Guide is an excellent reference publication.
The Warmen's Civil War Collectibles Identification and price guide by Russell Lewis is well presented in both text and illustration. However, as a general rule, the prices listed would not be expected to be current. One omission was the over-the-shoulder, or circular saxhorn that was commonly used by Civil War bands. Prices, depending on the maker, will vary; anywhere from a low of $3,500 to over $15,000 for a presentation instrument. Of course, condition of the instrument should be taken into account when bidding. Fortunately, missing parts can be reproduced by today's musical instrument craftsmen, but at a fairly high cost.
As an amateur musician, I love to play the old saxhorns of the Civil War period as they produce a lovely mellow sound when using a period mouthpiece.
