In the Beginning...
I still remember vividly, after all these years, the impact that Final Fantasy had on me as a young gamer. Between FF and Dragon Warrior, these sealed my fate as a die-hard RPG fan and I have never looked back. At the time, the graphics, storyline, and gameplay were new and enthralling. Modern RPG'ers would undoubtedly scoff at this fossil, and many would not have the strength of will to finish it to the end. I feel bad for new gamers who missed out on the dawning of one of the most popular and highly acclaimed series in video game history. They'll never know just how far back moogles, chocobas, and marlboros go, and have missed out on this strong foundation for the later gems in the series. That's not to say it can't be played now (Final Fantasy Origins for the Playstation) but suffering through it after experiencing the technical marvels and advanced gameplay of FF XII would probably be too much for even the most diehard RPG or FF fan. Still, it might be worth the trouble for some. Gameplay consisted of four characters that you customized according to your own preferences out of six different classes, ranging from black belt and thief to various mages. At the time, this was exhilirating. Customizable gameplay? A new idea then that will never get tired. The graphics were big back then also, and I'll never forget the thrill of seeing my characters literally "grow up" in stature after meeting the requirements. The music was, and still is, memorable and stirring, and will ring a bell for many FF fans. The fighting is turn based, with a humorous twist in that once you marked a foe, that turn was dedicated to that, and only that, character. If the baddie was slain by your allies, when your turn came you just swung uselessly at empty space. Not a major problem, but one that was eventually ironed out in subsequent versions. I remember many hours of toiling to both level up and gain gil to purchase items and equipment, which is still a basic of all FF games. The storyline was engrossing and the character development was quite decent, also hallmarks of most subsequents installments, and major incentives for me as a player. I still remember the thrill of that last "quest", marching into the castle for the last time to defeat the big boss, and still get it in later games. I would recommend this for the serious RPG'er, especially those enthralled by the FF series. Playing the original games might be tedious at best, but players can appreciate the growth and development of video gaming through each part in the series as well as get a solid background for all things FF. You might enjoy it more than you think. PROS - Introduction to character development and customization, and to many unique aspects and roots of FF series. - Awesome musical soundtrack. - Still get a thrill when you beat the final baddie! - Great graphics (for its time.) CONS - May be too rustic for new gamers to appreciate.

The end of world as we know it
Here's the scenario - a government plague center testing viruses to use for chemical warfare lets a baddie escape. It's a killer virus with a 99.6% susceptibility, and it's on the loose and spreading everywhere. This is the setting for Stephen King's epic "The Stand". Of course, being King, the book describes the travails of multiple characters, and does it in such a way that you feel like they have become your friends and seem almost impossible to be imaginary. To me, that is King's best gift. Of course, the engaging and always interesting storylines are also a big draw. This is not only a superb and classic King story, it's also the first every of its kind trying to imagine what life would be like if an apocolypse of the Captain Tripps magnitude ever occurred. This makes it as much a sociological treatise as much as entertaining fiction. A truly awesome offering by King not to be missed. I challenge anyone to read the first fifty pages and not finish it.

KINGDOM HEARTS WILL STEAL YOUR HEART
As a huge RPG fan, I replay my games more than once over time. It's always nice to go back to an old favorite and replay it, as the experience always changes. With Kingdom Hearts, as soon as it was finished, I wanted to replay it immediately. I have never been so taken by a game before, it's absolutely astonishing. It affects so many different aspects of people. It will thrill the most ardent die-hard RPG game fan; bring you back to your childhood with endearing and well-loved characters from Disney classics; touch your heart with it's romance, love, friendship, and the power of good over evil. I had no idea what it was going to be like when I bought it, and I urge you not to read too much into before purchasing it. JUST BUY IT. You WILL love it. You WILL enjoy every minute of this epic and groundbreaking masterpiece. The graphics are stunning and original, and set the backdrop for this unforgettable story. The main character, Sora, is endearing and instantly likeable, and the story of how he and his friends Riku and Kairi are separated by the forces of evil, and how he struggles to reunite them with the help of new pals Donald and Goofy, is stirring, touching, and ultimately unforgettable. The graphics, stellar voice casting, and superb storyline combine to give you an experience you will never forget. Of course, Disney characters abound, over 100 fo them. Don't think for a minute these are all cheerful, harmless, boring additions used simply as a marketing ploy, as they all play integral and unique roles in the story. Sora and his pals help certain characters with their own particular stories, while receiving assistance for their own in return. There are villains as well as classic beloved characters, and each setting is appropriate and unique for each confrontation. There are also tons of familiar characters from Squaresoft, especially the Final Fantasy series, and for any avid RPG fan it's like a walk down memory lane. Sora and his pals use weapons, armor, magic, and accessories to defeat the many forces of evil that stand in the way of reuniting him and his friends. These modes are relatively simple to use, and you don't have to get bogged down with an endless and dizzying display of possibilities to equip and use these items. The game is intuitive, allowing you to proceed without having to agonize over what you have to do next. A journal also helps you keep track, which was handy. The game is also full of side quests that are fulfilling and lets you get more out of the story than you already are (hard to believe). The mode of travel between worlds, the gummi ship, is the only aspect of the game that I thought could use improvement. The customization is awkward and poorly explained. In sum, this is a game that anyone who possesses a PS2 should own. I can't imagine anyone not being drawn into the engaging story, lush and unmatched graphics, straightfoward game play, and hundreds of familiar and entertaining characters. Whether you're six or sixty, you're bound to love it and will play it again and again while wishing for the next installment.
