There is a tendency by artists who wish to grasp the beauty within tragedy to create for us handsome heroes and haunting heroines. This ploy is the easiest path to follow in representing that cut from life so familiar to most every audience member, give them a hug of comfort under the shadow of blight. Annette instead takes us on a merry-go-round ride that instead captures this rainbow of emotion amid pain with caricatures of those very soul sensations that both tear us to bits while molding the beauty we are sure to evolve upon that beaten path. In her art is what she knows from her own life's struggle, how this gathering of family, of creatures created by a hap-hazard god, some sensual and strong, some so ugly as to be endearing, some so painful the painted smiles are obvious lies, how all these characters still require for us each a hug and a tear because they are each of us shown as pure emotion. We carry them with us along each step, protect them as children born of our scars.
