The Bob Penkhus Volvo Mazda that you see today had its humble beginning back in 1951 when Robert N. Penkhus moved his young family from Ames, Iowa and opened a used car and truck operation in Colorado Springs. New cars were added to the business in 1957 when Mr. Penkhus became one of the first ten dealers in the United States to obtain a Volvo franchise. In 1972 the Volvo store was moved to a fledgling area of Colorado Springs which became Motor City. The combination of a quality product and a reputation for excellent customer service assured continued growth, including the addition of Mazda in October 1972. Mazda would join the Volvo store in 1975 to increase productivity and to better serve our customers' needs. Now all vehicles, Volvo, Mazda, used cars, trucks and SUVs could be offered and serviced at one facility. Used cars, trucks and SUVs have always been a vital part of our business. In 1977 we introduced our Select Certified Pre-Owned program for used vehicles.
