Resident Evil Zero "Thumbs Up!"
Resident Evil 0 is unique in it’s own right in the classic Resident Evil series because of the main game play feature dubbed the “partner zapping” system. This system allows you to now control both of the main characters, Rebecca Chambers (S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team’s 18 year old medic seen in the original Resident Evil) and Billy Coen (an escaped ex-military convict) simultaneously through the entire game. Both characters can travel together, with one character being controlled by the player and the other by the computer, or split up and search separate areas each at the same time. Even when controlling your own character, you can also control the other characters movements with the C stick. This dual control is crucial to solving some of the puzzles in the game. Each character has different abilities. Rebecca can acquire chemicals with her mixing kit and can get into tight spaces, but is more fragile to enemy attacks. In contrast, Billy can handle heavy objects, has an oil lighter and can sustain more damage than Rebecca, but cannot mix herbs, which any character could do from previous games. Another excellent feature is the fact the game does away with the use of boxes placed in fixed locations for the player to store items in. Instead, the player can now drop items on the floor to make room for new ones, which can be later retrieved and used for future use. Dropped off items can be found on the player’s map as you go through the game. The plot-line, graphics, as well as gameplay offer a unique experience for the Resident Evil fans out there. The camera angels will aggravate you, which is one thing Resident Evil is notorious for doing to it’s players, but the reward of seeing the horrific graphics and disturbingly realistic audio is well worth it. I also found that this was one of the hardest Resident Evil games I’ve played if not the hardest. You have to constantly monitor 2 people instead of one, exchange ammo and supplies when needed, and deal with more powerful enemies. But I still love the game for it’s graphics especially, as well as offering to us a new character like Billy Coen, who doesn't take crap from zombies, which is why I give it a thumbs up for excellence.

Fatal Frame "A True Survivor Horror"
"Scariest ever"...as quoted by James Mielke-EGM Magazine. I cannot deny that this quote does this title justice. With it’s unique and unusual storyline, fighting style with a camera, as well as atmospheric sound design; it truly ranks up there with Silent Hill on the survivor horror level. As a horror gamer, I find the Fatal Frame series a true demonstration of what a horror game can be. It supposedly is based off a true story, but of course it’s embellished a little. Such rituals you see in this game make you wonder if they really were carried out such as for example “the blinding mask,” which speaks for itself. It did make me curious to look up Himuro mansion, but mystery surrounds the topic and it is hard to weed out fact from fiction of what people are saying about it. It is also worth noting that the game was not explicitly advertised as being based on a true story in Japan, and that the “based on a true story” tag line was not used until Tecmo released the game outside of Japan. . Story-wise, it is filled with supernatural elements that truly make it stand apart from other titles such as Silent Hill. Armed with a camera and upgrades you find along your journey of survival, you encounter a variety of ghosts that haunt the grounds of the mansion. Our main character Miku Hinasaki is drawn to the mansion in search of her brother Mafuyu, who has disappeared. As Miku, you explore the mansion uncovering the mystery of the rope shrine maiden Kirie. I loved the storyline and the horror elements they incorporated, such as feeling Miku’s heartbeat quicken in the palm of your hand, as the controller shakes when tension mounts or ghosts approach. The graphics and game atmosphere were well done with unsettling environmental sounds, mumbling ghost chants, as well as brilliant ghost designs. What more can I say? There are mini time attacks you can do to unlock more secrets in the game. The added features make it truly worth it. I’ve owned the game for 2 years now, but I still love playing through it every now and than. This is a great game to add to any game collection. Happy horror gaming! :)

Classic RE on the DS
As a Resident Evil fan, I thought I would pay tribute to the series by buying the game for my Nintendo DS. Sadly, I found it being a step down from what I was expecting. Based off the first game, Resident Evil-1996-, this game is pretty much the same as the original with some differences. One, I found that all blood seen in the game was green for one. I realize mostly kid's play the DS, but as a horror gamer I didn't care for that feature. Second, the game is a little different from the original as far as the puzzles go. Now, some I found pretty fun to figure out, but some I didn't like. Also, an interesting thing they did was incorporate new enemies from the remake of Resident Evil. These creatures are seen in the middle of the game and added a twist I didn't see coming. I'm not putting down the game, it did have the classic Resident Evil feel, but this gamer wishes they did something more with it. The mini-game with the knife is quite a fun activity to do in the game, but I don't think it's enough. I can't give it an excellent but I will give it a good.
