About

I am a firefighter/paramedic with the city of Dallas. My user name came about as a joke and it just stuck.

Formidable phone with not so formidable software
You know, I have been using Blackberry phones for a quite awhile and have never really had an issue with them, but this time I must take exception. I downgraded from my 8900 to this 8310 because I needed something I could use as a knock around phone at work. My job puts me in places where I have a tendency to get rather messy and I needed something that would take a beating, but it wouldn't really matter. In comes the 8310. What appeared to be a solidly built phone from the outside proved to be a real piece of junk on the inside. I suppose I might have got a lemon, but I authenticated the fact that it was from Blackberry and not a knock off. Anyway, once I booted it up I found the thing to be extremely sluggish. It took what seemed to be an unacceptable amount of time using the scroll wheel. I would scroll over to the next icon and it would hesitate to the point that I tried to scroll again only to find that it would bounce over 3 or 4 instead of the one. Getting into submenus proved to be just as slow, and don't get me started on the camera. All in all, not the best bet for anyone who likes Blackberry.

not for big fingers
Samsung continues to impress me with their innovative software applications with regard to these non-smartphones. I had read some early reviews about its functionality and its touch screen QWERTY keyboard. Many people were indicating that it had a large enough screen to allow for the keys to be found easily when texting. I'm afraid I must disagree. I never considered myself to have fat fingers, but clearly these types of phones are not meant for individuals such as me. I appreciate Samsung's efforts in making something so compact do so much. But, in this day and age, when texting is so commonplace, you really need to be careful in choosing a phone with a decent size keyboard. This is not it!!!
