Not LoTR, but 'Flight' soars as high in the 2nd Season
New Zealand conquered the world in cinematic terms with Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings'. Then came 'Flight of the Conchords'... When I encountered 'Flight of the Conchords' in its first season, I wasn't certain quite what to make of it. What was it? It was almost musical comedy but not quite. Undoubtedly clever and hilarious, it did not fit comfortably into any 'genre'. The humour can be outrageous or it can be sly. Every type of music is explored by this talented pair and every form of humour is adopted with bold assurance. 'Flight of the Conchords' is, in fact, unique, and I became thoroughly addicted to the show. When the 2nd season was released, I could not wait to own it. One of the hallmarks of great comedy is its continuing appeal after countless viewings. 'Flight of the Conchords' is great comedy. In some cases, only the first season of a series is worth keeping but in the case of 'Flight of the Conchords', the second season was as marvelous as the first. I only hope that the return of the Conchords to New Zealand is a temporary setback and that a third season will follow... somehow! And by the way, 'Eagle vs. Shark', also starring Jemaine Clement, is worth the price of admission as well as a wonderful, off-beat comedy.

Lars and the Real Girl and the Nature of Reality
'Lars and the Real Girl' is one of the best independent films that I have seen. It is a journey of exploration in the life of the protagonist, Lars. Scarred emotionally by the early death of his mother, his father's withdrawal from his sons and the abandonment of his older brother, Lars lives a reclusive existence in his brother's garage. Although he is functional in society's terms and has no trouble in maintaining a job successfully, he has become almost pathologically shy, despite all attempts by his sister-in-law to draw him into the family circle. He has retreated emotionally to the point where a simple touch burns him. Lars comes to a realisation that his lifestyle is hurting the people he loves and therefore takes dramatic and unconventional measures by purchasing a 'girlfriend' in the form of a sex doll over the internet. He introduces Bianca as his girlfriend to his family and the community and through his own behaviour towards her, transforms her into a 'real girl'. With fantastic irony, Bianca in time comes to represent the very best in human nature. Lars himself declares that she was put on this earth 'to help people'. From the start, he requests that she be allowed to stay in the guest room in the house, thereby making it clear that she is NOT to be viewed or treated as a sexual object. By accompanying Bianca into every type of social situation from volunteer work at the local hospital to parties, he is able to gain social confidence and to develop close relationships with his family and the community. Lars' initial refusal to commit himself to relationships with other human beings was based on an equation of love with death due to the death of his own mother in childbirth. As he grows ever closer to all the people who embrace Bianca unconditionally because of their love for HIM, he ultimately finds the courage to sacrifice Bianca for the sake of a possible future relationship with a co-worker. His own obvious grief and that of the community as a whole when confronted with the 'death' of Bianca make it clear, however, that she was as much a 'real girl' as his co-worker Margo. Although the premise of the film is rich in humour, the underlying philosophical and psychological currents make 'Lars and the Real Gir' an amazingly profound study of humanity and the very nature of reality.

Another fabulous Harvest Moon game for all ages
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Harvest Moon series of games, and the latest games to be released cofirm the value of the series. Harvest Moon has created a world defined by a fundamental philosophy that encourages hard work, patience, friendship and loyalty to the community. Your character, in 'Tree of Tranquility' for the Wii, is given the task of restoring an Island to its former state of prosperity and fruitfulness. You can play either a male or a female character in this game. You can choose one or more of four lots for your house, farm, raise animals, fish, mine and cook, court and marry one of the eligible bachelors or girls on the Island and have a child. In fact, you can begin a new game playing the character of your own child! Your own success works towards the benefit of the entire community. In helping others, you help yourself. Selfishness and obsession with wealth have no place in Harvest Moon. You do need to make money in order to upgrade your farm and enjoy all the best options in life, but your success in every endeavour is linked to the prosperity of the community as a whole. In Tree of Tranquility, unlike many other Harvest Moon games, you actually can travel to more than one island once you have unlocked new options. You can meet exotic animals and encourage them to become your pets by befriending them. Wild animals who can be tamed include cats, dogs, a penguin and a turtle. On your ranch, you can raise poultry and livestock as well as exotic creatures including ostriches and silkworms. 'Tree of Tranquility' has a clearly-defined plot in terms of rebuilding the Rainbow Bridges that will allow a new Mother Tree to grow in place of the one that has died. For lovers of Northern Mythology, the Mother Tree holds echoes of Yggdrasil, the World Tree but there is neither combat nor strife in 'Tree of Tranquility'. Instead, the bridges are created by means of 'Recipes' as you collect the required ingredients. This game will appeal to any one who loved 'Magical Melody' as you can choose whether to live in the mountains, by a river, near the city centre or at the beach. Festivals are splendid and the Courtship Events will not disappoint. In particular, the traditions of meeting at the foot of the 'Mother Tree' for declarations of love and the 'Starry Night Festival' in the Brownie Ranch District are extremely romantic. Harvest Moon is appropriate for players of any age and will delight both young and old. It is well worth the investment and you will find that you can continue to enjoy the game for months or even years.
