Independent Jane
I am a former Arthur Murray dance instructor. I worked for the company from 1979 to 1981 which is well after the Murrays' sold the business but it was a highlight of my life. So when I heard that Jane Murray Heimlich wrote a memoir, I was intrigued and bought it on eBay. Before I read it, I also ordered Kathryn Murray's book "My Husband Arthur Murray" and read it before I read Jane's book. I'm not sure why I wanted to read them in that order but I did. I should also say that another reason why I purchased Jane's book was because I found the two videotaped interviews of her that are posted online. One is on her publisher's web site. She comes across as a tremendously charming person in these interviews and they made me want to learn more about her. I found both books to be informative and easy to read. I read them straight through not for once getting bored with either of them. When I read Kathryn's book I found it interesting that she barely mentions her children at all. Only briefly once or twice in the book. Of course, the book's title indicates it is about her husband but she tells a lot about how they met and her own life so the book is more about their life together than it is about Arthur. So I was surprised by the few mentions of the children. But Jane did the same thing. Hers is a memoir of her own life as an independent woman and how challenging it was for her to have her own life given that she had two very famous parents and then she married a man who wasn't famous when they met but who became famous. She says very little about her husband and children. Although I was surprised by this, it was also the point of the book. Was I being sexist to expect a woman to write more about her children and husband? Maybe. But the fact that both of them wrote very little about their children still intrigues me. It is something they have in common. I learned quite a bit about the Murray family history by reading these two books. I learned about Jane's work with alternative medicines and therapies. I also learned that although Jane feels she is different from her mother and father because they were more outgoing and extroverted, she seems to have a lot in common with her mother. These things aren't directly stated but they can be sensed in her memoir. I encourage others to read it.
