Business InformationHistory/background
The Eldred Company was founded in 1947 to build custom machines for the glassware industry. Mechanical loaders transfer ware from a conveyor to a burnoff machine. Burnoff machines create a finished edge on a drinking glass. The Decorator machine screen prints up to 6 colors on the side of a glass. Corelle (R) bowls and Pyrex (R) measuring cups are decorated on Eldred machines. Eldred machines can be purchased through Olivotto Glass Technologies.

Layout Templates
To create the complex cam path designs, a layout template shown is laid on top of a circular piece of steel. The cam design is transferred by scribing or etching the template design in the surface of the steel. Think of the template as similar to a card board stencil with a flower shape used to repeat a wall border pattern. With the advent of computer controlled machine tools, layout templates be came obsolete. Today, the templates are finding new uses to decorate homes and landscape.
Industrial templates have found their way into home décor as wall hangings or on tabletops under glass. Each unique design displays over a hundred hours of design and fabricating time. Many are covered with blue toolmaker’s ink’ used to create the initial layout. Centerlines, notes and numbers are c an be seen etched into the surface of the centering cam layout template. Displayed on
each template is its rich history in the aged patina & scars from industrial use.
Wood Foundry Pattern
Unique industrial wood foundry patterns were used by the Eldred Company to create a sand casting molded parts. Many patterns display their original finish and factory identification markings.
Patterns are the first step in making a part from a metal casting. Companies use castings to reduce the manufacturing costs of a part. Once a part is designed on paper, a wood pattern is created. Eldred patterns were created by a pattern maker, a woodworker that uses his skill set to create simple to complex patterns. Next, a foundry presses the pattern into wet sand to create sand casting molds. (Think of walking along the beach in wet sand and leaving footprints. Your feet would be the pattern and the footprint is the sand cast mold.) After removing the pattern, the foundry fills the mold cavity with molten liquid such as cast iron, steel, or bronze to create a casting. Wood patterns can be used multiple times. The casting is send to Eldred for finish machining.
