DOD FX-17 Vintage Guitar Wah Volume Controller Pedal
Aug 18, 2016
The perfect sized volume pedal for pedalboards
I love the FX17 and all its quirks. It has a great foot feel for it's size. It's wider than a Hotone or any modern mini foot pedal. It's just the right size for your pedalboard while feeling good under foot. As a wah, it's got a more 80s sounds than a Crybaby but it can still do as you expect from a wah. Great as a volume pedal, which is how I use it primarily. You can adjust the wah sweep and the start level of volume by adjusting 2 pots at the front of the pedal. Best to take off the front face. Weird and hard to do. Not really worth doing either, tbh. Isolated power works best with this guy if there's a lot of pedals in your chain. Get a 1/8" to 9v adaptor, since that's how DOD used to do power. It's heavy and built like a tank.

Ibanez STL Super Tube Screamer Rare Vintage Guitar Effect Pedal MIJ Japan

All the features of a TS10 and more
If you've fallen for the TS10, and it's popular players, give the STL a try. I got mine for roughly half I paid for the TS10, and it's more dynamic, fuller and constructed sturdier. This model is said to be a reworking of the fabled ST-9 Super Tube Screamer, with a small change to the circuit. I own both this and a TS10, both with JRC4558D chips. In fact the Super Tube STL has 2 of these chips. I love both, but the STL just sounds fuller to me. It can achieve more drive and more volume than a TS10, so I have to dial it back softer than I would a TS10 for the same tone. But the main thing is the 2 tone knobs. I find the TS10 to be wonderful but can feel a little slippery in the mids. The 'bite' knob on a STL can help dial that in. I get the tone knob set and then add a bit of bite, and then dial back the tone knob as needed. That gives me a more robust, punchier overdrive. But this thing can also scream. Crank that drive knob and it gets very fuzzy yet tasteful. Construction wise, it's heavier than a TS10. The footswitch has a rubber pad and I find the switch is not as finicky as the TS10. The Master or L series, which preceded the 10 series, has a similar look (which looks super Tron / Back To The Future II) but I feel better construction. If you are looking for a TS10, definitely check out the STL if you can get it cheaper!
