If you are a dead serious about being a photographer, this lens is for you.
The Canon 24-105 f/4L IS USM is a great lens for anyone using a Canon DSLR. If you are looking for glass that will last for years to come, Canon L lenses are the way to go. I bought this lens to build and expand my photography business. This lens has helped give me the quality and functionality that I need. Being built by Canon and having the red L ring ensures quality of the lens that can be seen by anyone who knows what they are doing. Secondly, for an advanced photographer that is moving toward a pro business, this lens will give you almost the full range of lenses in one, single lens. HOWEVER, this is only to get you started. Once you understand that certain lenses work better for certain purposes and you have developed your business enough to afford new gear, you will need to buy different lenses out of the focal range. Why? Because for portraits, a Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS knocks this one off the shelf and into the bin. So why get the 24-105? It will help get your business started and will be in your bag and on your camera for years to come. You also might not have the $2000 for a Canon 70-200 right off the bat. If you have been shooting a point and shoot or a mirror less camera and you are moving to a DSLR, the two things you will notice first is the size and weight of your camera AND lens. Quality gear is heavy. You can literally feel the quality that way. But don't let that discourage you. Look at what you are carrying. Pro gear! This is what the big boys use to take pictures. This lens is for people who are serious about photography. If you don't want to start a photography business, if you don't read articles on how to take better pictures, if you don't practice taking pictures EVERYDAY, don't buy this lens. If your camera has dust on it, don't even bother with this lens and go look at a cheap $300 Canon lens or even a cheap Sigma.
