Mavericks - All Night Live 1 [Vinyl New]
Oct 31, 2016
My favorite band releases disappointing album.
I have to say first off that I love this band beyond words. They are easily the best band touring right now anywhere. What happened? This live album which is supposed to be a document of the good time group that is enjoying a renewed career life. I have heard TV performances that were better than this release. The mix is muddy and sounds like it was mic'd from 50 feet away. There is nothing but bass drums and Raul Malo's voice for all practical purposes. The horns, organ, & guitars are all buried in the mix and there is no clarity. The performances are pretty good in and of themselves, but the technical aspect of the recording is awful. The other annoying thing to me is that every song is so tightly segued into the next one. They do this in concert for the first 3 or 4 tunes and it is very effective, but for every cut on the album to be edited together in such machine gun fashion is exhausting...and not in the good way that their shows are exhausting. I find it hard to believe the Mavericks would put this forward as the first release on their own new record label. I only hope the new studio album due out in the spring returns the band to its high quality standards of past releases.
