Have you ever REALLY been to "Minnesota"?
A bit dated at this point (i.e., it agonizes over the import of the recent 1998 election of Jesse Ventura), but definitely a worthwhile read for anyone who is interested in "imagined communities" in America, or in Minnesota specifically. It covers, in just over a dozen short chapters, the meanings and evolution of Minnesota's politics, social services, history, and collective identity. It does not necessarily break any boundaries in such a community study, but it does come to some gratifyingly provocative conclusions about what it means to claim to be "a Minnesotan." Good for the academic and generally not intimidating for the amateur.
