Man's Illegal Life : The First George Man Mystery by Keith Heller
Jun 22, 2021
Brilliant
'To kill a fellow human being in such a distinctive and horrid fashion bespeaks a profound hatred. And hatred always has a very long history.' (page 74) London parish watchman George Man learns that a fellow watchman, Taylor Hoole, seeks him out to further investigate the discovery of a restrained and deceased body in boarded up Drury Lane ramshackle house. After meeting with Uncle Hoole in his cramped garret they set off to examine the scene. The circumstances they find are reminiscent of the barbarous practices during the Great Plague decades earlier. Man has a nagging hunch that there is more to the death, specifically the manner of death and becomes obsessed with investigating the death despite official opposition. To say that this tale is gritty is a perverse understatement and it is definitely not for everyone. However, if you are looking for some originality and creativity I would highly recommend it. Unfortunately, I read 'Man's Storm' (book 2 in the trilogy) before this one and I wish I hadn't. The character development missing in 'Man's Storm' is provided for in this one. I really like the way the author developed the alternate meaning of 'man's illegal life' on page 128. Yes, I will definitely go on to 'Man's Loving Family'.
