A good, non-standard version, of this iconic JAVA text book
It has been a while since I attended a college course, and so it was quite a surprise to find out how much text books cost these days. I mean, really, $150 for a paperback book? I went to my friends at eBay to find out what they could do for me, and they came through with this book at a much more reasonable price. The book looks great, but I noticed it had a different cover and was labeled 'international edition' with a warning 'not authorized for sale in the U.S.A.' This was a bit of a concern, but so far has not been a real problem. The sale actually took place outside the US, so I don't expect any official knocks on the door. So how does it compare with the US version? So far, I have not found any differences. The page numbers the instructor specifies have matched. Since I have not finished the course (or the book), I can't say for sure it is 'identical' with the US version, but there seems to be a good chance it will serve. As a textbook for a class, it appears to be quite adequate. As a stand-alone book to learn JAVA from, it seems a superior choice. The subject progression seems logical, and the book has a number of formats and features to highlight and educate the user. Additional education aids are available on the internet. There seem to be a number of features available to the instructor, such as answers, tests, lesson suggestions and powerpoint slides. These are listed as being available on a CD, which was NOT included with this book. Probably it comes with the referenced 'instructor manual'. These features also are supposedly available on the internet. Like all text books, it is clumsy as a 'reference manual' after you are already familiar with JAVA. In order to find what you are looking for, you generally have to depend on the Index in back, unless the question is broad enough to be listed in the table of contents. And, of course, subjects are arranged in 'teaching order', not alphabetical or always close relationship order. Thus, you may have to flip back and forth during your research. All in all, a good book, good for the course and worth keeping thereafter.

Not your typical vampire movie
I bought this movie because I needed a fourth DVD in order to meet the requirements to get a discount. Generally, I do not like vampire flicks; I'm not sure why they just do not appeal to me. But I found this movie to be very enjoyable and it was actually the best of the four movies I bought. The idea of 'vegetarian' vampires is not new, but this presentation was very well done. All the aspects of these vampires presented 'held together'; there was none of the wishy/washy 'straying' from their principals which seem common for this sub-genre. Of particular interest was the developing relationship between the vampire and the non-vampire. No particular justification was given for how deeply they bonded, but then, love is pretty much not justifiable. The relationship was presented on the mental level rather than the physical, where it was much more enjoyable to experiance along with the characters. The movie spent most of its time on the relationship, with a sub-plot of 'regular' vampires feeding (on people) in the area. It could have been a better movie if the concentration on the relationships lasted throughout the movie. But, as is common these days, the last section of the movie developed into confrontation between the 'good' vampires and the 'bad' vampires. Although there were some decent action and special effects in this last section, some discrepancies snuck in. It was presented that each vampire has some 'power' such as mind reading or future seeing. Ok, I didn't have a problem with that. However, we have one vampire who's power is 'hunting'. Fine, it's not clear why this 'hunter' fixates on one particular person to hunt, but the possibility of this power is quite reasonable. In fact, since the vampires are presented as the 'ultimate predators', it would seem this should be an aspect of all vampires, not just this one. But if this power is in the same class as mind reading or seeing the future, how was the hunter so easily fooled at the start of the hunt? And if it was not a 'power', but just a skill, how was the hunter able to find the place the 'prey' came from some indeterminent, at least a few weeks, time back? Finally, the vampires are presented as immortals who can be killed. And not by some specific act like in the Highlander concept. Nitpicking aside, a very enjoyable movie, which I recommend

A movie as good as the book
After watching the sequel (Prince Caspian), I remembered that I had seen this a while back, but could not find it on my shelves to refresh my memory. So I went searching to get a (possibly new) copy. This one was readily available, at a reasonable price. The movie is a good as I remembered, although possibly not quite as good as the sequel. The writing is good, and fairly faithful to the book, the acting by the kids is excellent, and the effects are marvelously done. All in all, a great movie experience for young and old. I can hardly wait for the 3rd one, coming out this winter, even though the writer/director of the first 2 is not involved. Of course, there are unanswered questions. Like how 2 young boys, who presumably have never held a sword before, become masters of the sword in a day, or even a week (time does not seem to be particularly linear in Narnia). But as entertainment, this movie is hard to beat. This particular edition is much better than standard. The case has a cardboard box around it which is nice, with 2 discs. One disc has the movie, and the other has a whole bunch of special features, showing much background into how the movie was made and some of the special effects. I would highly recommend this movie in general, and this particular edition in particular.
