More Personal Things About Me
I was born and grew up in New Mexico, so I have a deep love of the colors of the earth and nature. I grew up in small towns and spent a lot of time reading and playing on my own. I learned early to appreciate the beauty of trees, sky and earth. I read lots of comic books when I was growing up such as Katy Keene, Little Audrey, Brenda Starr, Archie, and a series called The Classics. I am a very organic and tactile person and I think it shows in my work. I love to create things from scratch. I keep a sketch book where I draw out my ideas, and I also carry around a blank book for jotting down things I see when I am out. I am into different and whimsical things. I love to shop for remnants and have a large collection. I find inspiration in a number of different places, my pets, children's books I read, an old blanket, a pair of worn jeans or any peice of fabric. I read lots of children's books, I just love the illustrations.
Business InformationHistory/background
I was born In Clovis, New Mexico and moved to the East Coast with my Mom when I was fourteen. I have been married twice and have four children, and five grandchildren. I started making teddy bears in 1980 and had to make my own discs for the joints. I used a door knob cutter and cut them from particle board, then sanded them smooth with sandpaper. I bought nuts and bolts from the local hardware store. I didn't know how to get mohair, so I started making my teddy bears from upholstery fabric. The faux furs that were available were awful, so I stayed away from them. I discovered recycled denim when I realized how many people loved their worn jeans and hated to throw them away. I started asking my family and friends to save their worn out jeans and give them to me. Denim fabric is quite wonderful and each pair of jeans makes quite a different bear. I consider myself a sculpture artist who uses fabric for my art.
