A Great WWI Film
I bought this dvd for use in my European History class. It is the first war protest movie of its kind. It depicts the horror of war and trench fighting from the view of young German soldiers. I chose to order the dvd so that I could use selected scenes when time was an issue. Sometimes, I show the entire film. Even though it is an older film and most of my students do not know the actors, it does keep their attention. There are not many movies out there that depict this side of war with material appropriate for high school viewing. I highly recommend this movie.

Tuskegee Ariment
As a United States History teacher, this is one of my favorite films to share with my students. During WWII, our servicement fought in segregated units. This film shows the determination, courage, and sheer will, that these soldiers displayed. It is an inspiring film to children of all races and ethnicities. The film is a little older so most of my students have not seen it but the movie is by no means dated. The film is very appropriate for high school students and they love the action scenes.

Radical Reflections
This is an excellent book for teachers of literacy. Mem Fox has some radical ideas about the teaching of reading and writing. Her ideas are also easy to implement. This is an easy read that lets teachers know that teaching reading and writing shouldn't be so hard. It is important, she argues, that those of us who teach writing, be writers ourselves so that we are aware of our student's stuggles and frustrations. Another great piece of advice is that teachers take joy in their student's work and provide a much needed audience for our writers by responding with great enthusiasm. Give them a purpose for writing, reward their efforts and they will continue to write.
