Great fictional novel with historical accuracy
What a great amount of historical research was done to write this book. The accuracy is phenomenal. This book told of the history of Texas, New Mexico, Utah, New Mexico, and mostly California before it's statehood. I felt like I was there myself with Garnet, first getting to Santa Fe in the wagon train with her new husband Oliver, and then going over all the mountains and deserts on horseback to get to California. I loved seeing the new country through the eyes of someone seeing it for the very first time, traveling so slowly instead of driving through it in a day in a car. It made me see beauty in places that I'd only thought of as barren wilderness. It was nice to see the lives of two unlikely friends, Garnet and Florinda, meet over and over again as they helped each other out with survival in this new country in the West. Great book!
