Laser engraving uses a ceramic compound to bond with stainless steel by hitting with a high powered Class 1 laser beam. It works like a dot matrix printer. The engraved material appears as a black print on shiny metal surface. When engraved under correct conditions, laser engraving will last for years. In order to remove the laser engraving one will have to remove the top layer of metal. Some US military facilities use laser engraving to mark tools & equipment with serial numbers. Only brass, copper, stainless steel, & titanium can be marked with laser by reacting with the ceramic compound. Soft material such as wood & plastics can be engraved by deeply carving into the material.
