Canon EOS 5D
This is easy. The 5D is the best digital camera I have ever used. I photograph high end antique and collector cars and am not a gear head or real pro. I know cars, that is what I do. Cameras are a tool I use, not a real hobby or profession. Upgrading was a hard step for me since I have been extremely pleased with the 20D I have used for many years. Probably some 100K + cycles on that 20D with no problems. The full frame sensor takes digital photography with a different view from the APC-S sensor I have become accustomed too. Everything is now a little wider view and the zoom lenses lose some of their zoom of course. What is lost there is easily compensated for in 13MP resolution the 5D has, but it takes a little while to get used to. Going from 8 to 13 is pretty drastic. I have never used a full frame before like many of you may have with your 1Ds and I saw no reason to buy a 30D or 40D over the 20D. That was not a justifiable upgrade. The 5D is. The biggest down side is to say goodbye to any EF-S (small) lenses you may have acquired on your 20 or 30. I was a fan of the EF-S 17-85mm IS lens. It was my first IS lens, cheap and worked like it was expensive. Even though it was no L, it was a very decent lens that took some incredible photos with. I really am disappointed that canon altered the EOS lenses to take away the 100% compatibility they have always had with the EF-S. Good thing for me is I sold the 2 EF-S I had with my 20D. I will never buy an EF-S lens again, even if I buy a 20D body for a back up again, etc. It took me a bit to understand the EF and EF-S difference and now I am upset that the EF-S limitation was not explained a little clearer years ago. Most of it was my own ignorance in my progression with photography but shame on you canon for that. My 5D was a kit with the 24-105mm f/4.0 L Lens. I really did not want the lens at first as I made it a vow to go wit h 2.8 everything upgrading. Although this is not a F/2.8, it has become my favorite outdoor lens. In fact, its simply great with its broad zoom range. My older 17-35mm f/2.8 L and trusty 80-200M f2.8 drainpipe complete my ranges of lenses with my 5D other than my nifty fifty. These 17-35 and 80-200 2.8 Ls are older but proven non IS lens. I highly recommend either for those that do not buy the brand new stuff and lose your tail. I buy everything 2nd generation, icluding this 5D. The full frame sensor sure widened up my 17-35 low side vs the APC-S of the 20D. This lens has become really useful now and is my indoor lens always. I bought that 17-35 to use as a low light lens on the 20D and did not use it that much as it was not that wide of angle on the APC-S. It is now on the full frame. On the other side, the full frame has taken my drainpipe’s zoom down some now. Makes me wish I had a 70-200 F2.8 with the 1.4 converter. That is probably my next trade and I will have to stick out with that white lens then. The 5D has a few flaws, nothing horrible. If I was to correct it, just needs a few more “Custom” memory settings vs the single it has now. I set my custom for portraits and leave it alone but have to setup the others, but not hard. In ending, my advice is NOT to buy this camera…. Why? I do not want your photos to look as good as mine!
