Metasequoia Creek Ltd.
In 1999, I named Metasequoia Creek after finding fossils in a creek bed of a small creek in the Columbia River Gorge, two miles below Bonneville Dam, along the Columbia River in Oregon. Also in 1999, I published a technical report for the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (Oregon Geology). Fossils collected from the site were shown competively at the Portland Regional Gem and Mineral Shows', where I earned a Masters Trophy for my educational display in 2004, as a member of the Columbia Gorge Rockhounds. From 1997 to 2007 I was a member of the Oregon State Police 'Volunteers in the Gorge' program, mainly to protect my soon to be historic creek, and other scenic areas from natural and man made disasters (litter patrol mostly). In 2004, Metasequoia was designated as Oregon's state fossil. In retro, I named the only geographical feature in Oregon before Metasequoia, (The Dawn Redwood), was the state fossil.
