Nintendo at the top of their game.
I first was introduced to the Mario Galaxy when i bought the second one. I loved it, so i decided to check out the original. First Impressions - What I first noticed in this game is that your hub world is a spiritual successor of sorts to Mario 64. Instead of a castle like in 64, its a spaceship, and you can explore it to find other rooms that contain different galaxies. I personally liked this display over the second, though I think it may be more of a nostalgia thing for SM64, some may prefer the straightforward easy to navigate galaxy map of the second game. Story - It's the same old story, bowser kidnaps Peach and you have to rescue her. If you haven't ever played a Mario game it'll be a great experience. While it adds a nice twist with the spaceship aspect, if you've played a mario game before, it's hard to shake the been there done that feel to the story. Gameplay - The mario series has always bee known for its tight controls. It's no different here, Mario's controls have never been better. With galaxy you also have a gravity aspect that changes things up. In the first few hours of gameplay, be prepared to be awed as you jump to another object and it's gravitational pull orbits you around until you finally land; it's some of the strongest parts of the game, and is what clearly separates this game from other platformer games. Level Design - The level design is some of the best i've ever seen. The pure creativity from the developers is amazing. From river floating in space, to a galaxy made up of sweets, its an expertly crafted game. I also liked how the worlds changed for different stars, whereas in galaxy 2 you had about two regular stars per world, in this one you have at least 4. This helps the replay ability of the game. You will be playing galaxies a few times over in order to get all 120 stars, and its nice addition for the worlds to change, or reveal a new path each play through. Graphics - The wii isn't known for its graphical prowess compared to the 360 or ps3, but when you have games like Mario galaxy, the art style is so well done you forget your playing on a less powerful system. Weither it be the sun shining on water, or the sand leaving imprints of Marios feet as he transverses the landscape, you'll be amazed by the graphical polish put into this game. Overall - If you're a fan of the Mario series, do yourself a favor and pickup this game. The Story is probably it's weakest point, but the sheer perfection of the gameplay, graphics, and level design help you overlook that quickly. Probably one of the most creative games in the series, second only to Galaxy 2, both or which are a showcase of Nintendo at the top of their game.
