Ancient Indian Artifacts by Jim Bennett (2008)
This book is the first in a series intended to assist collectors of all levels of artifact collecting. As an introductory book, it's focus is on the basics of artifact collecting. Artifact typology, grades and values, and building a collection are just a few of the areas covered. Best of all, the pictures are first rate! As we all know, many of the past books on the subject (some of the best ones) have really bad pictures. Black and White pictures that could never capture the beauty of high grade materials, shadows, and poor focus left a great deal to desire. The pictures are what really sealed the deal for me.

AUTHENTICATING ANCIENT INDIAN ARTIFACTS by JIM BENNETT
This is without doubt the best book on the subject I have come across. The author gathered knowledge from many experienced collectors and dealers, and this book is the result. Positive traits (those you expect to see on an ancient relic) and negative traits (those which are indicators of modern manufacture) are discussed. The author explains how to use a stereoscope for microscopic evaluation of artifacts, and there are lots of great pictures of positive and negative feature under magnification. This book totally changed the way I acquire artifacts for my collection. The days of surface hunting in deep-plowed fields are over, and most of my acquisitions are now purchases. I bought a stereoscope of my own, and I use it to inspect every artifact prior to purchase. And believe me, the price of this book and a stereoscope will save you money and grief!
