Spectacular early PS2 title
Silent Hill 2 is probably the best game of the entire franchise - it has a simple but unique plot that engages the player and requires no additional backstory or understanding of Silent Hill's world. James Sunderland has returned to this mist-shrouded town after receiving a letter from his dead wife, and braves ever increasing waves of weirdness and mind-boggling conditions as he presses on to find out the truth about who sent the letter and facing down his own inner demons as he does so. For a game that's ten years old, it has aged quite well. There's rarely any lag, and the dynamic lighting when James explores dark areas with his flashlight still looks good. Silent Hill's ever present mist does a good job of concealing the somewhat pixelated backgrounds and keeping the game's draw distance to manageable levels, resulting in a claustrophobic and oppressive atmosphere that really makes you feel lonely and in peril any time you're out and about. The game is very atmospheric, but it isn't light on action either. Silent Hill throws continually more dangerous and freaky monsters for James to fight through, and the game's combat system is both functional and effective: our protagonist can shoot, bludgeon, and stomp his way through the enemies with great effectiveness once the player has gotten the control scheme down. Gameplay is similar to Resident Evil titles of the same period, but the controls seem to be much smoother and more responsive (hurray for strafing!). If you like survival horror games and want to follow an engaging and introspective plot, go nab a copy of this game at your earliest opportunity.
