Excellent! Surprisingly watchable for a "teen" comedy.
1 of 1 found this helpful As the title suggests, this film is ostensibly just for teens. However, this is not really true. I was nearly twenty four when I first saw it, and in the intervening years (I'm now 32), it has not lost a single bit of its impact. If anything, it gets better every time I watch it. It still maintains the typical "teen movie" conventions, but with a smarter and more sophisticated approach that refuses to "dumb" itself down. In this way, it gives credit to the intelligence of the average teen, instead of insulting and typifying them.
This delightful and charming piece of pop culture is actually based on Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew", and it shows. Self-referential almost to a fault (but never annoyingly so), it maintains the basic plot of the play, but with a twist. Instead of not getting married, younger Bianca is unable to date until her older sister (Kat, the "shrew" of the piece) does. The problem is, Kat refuses and is generally b**chy and vile-on the surface, at least-to the point that no boy will have her anyway (they're too scared). Enter the new kid at school who becomes so smitten with Bianca that he will stop at nothing to have her. This, of course, involves finding someone fearless enough to want to date Kat. Through a convoluted bribe scheme (that I won't get into here), he finds the perfect match in another new guy that everyone is equally afraid of, and the fun begins.
From this point on, much of the film is comprised of a "tug of war" between two equally stubborn forces of nature. She can't stand him, and he won't give up. If the end result seems obvious (and it pretty much is), don't let that stop you from giving it a try. Cleverness abounds, and the script and dialog are priceless. To this day, I find myself laughing out loud during a number of scenes, despite the fact that I've seen them a dozen times or more. Oh, and be sure not to miss the closing credits, which are given the "outtakes and bloopers" treatment. The soundtrack also remains interesting and fun to listen to and fits the overall mood perfectly (It's worth mentioning here that I am a fan of all genres of music. You may not feel the same way.).
Overall, I'd say this is a really fun and smart comedy that both teens and adults (of my generation, at least) will find worth their while.
