Souper Bowl of Caring started in 1990 with a single youth group in Columbia, SC. Since then it has become a national effort generating over $33 million and engaging thousands of young people in community service on Super Bowl weekend. Every year congregations, schools, and businesses across the country collect non-perishable food items and $1 donations for food banks, soup kitchens, and other food distribution agencies in their community. Souper Bowl of Caring provides particpating groups with free basic resources to help plan and promote a collection. In 2006 more than 12,000 groups participated, generating over $5 million for local agencies across the country. All of the donations stay in the community where it is collected. None of the money is sent to Souper Bowl of Caring. Souper Bowl of Caring continues to look for new opportunities to reach out to young people and encourage them to use Super Bowl weekend as a time of giving and service.
