excellent source for beginner and experienced users
I have been a Live user since version 4 - Live 6 has made significant improvements to their powerful, yet user-friendly software since I first started using Live. Although I "paid my dues" and read through Ableton's manual that comes with version 6, John von Seggern nicely compliments what is already a thorough manual, by going into more detail with topics and features, and sharing his experience. For the beginner, he gives a useful background of MIDI and digital audio, setting up a DAW with Live 6 (including suggestions for audio / midi interfaces), and different ways the uninitiated could use Live 6 for their musical endeavors. As an experienced user, there were things in Live 6 I had a "working knowledge" of, but he helped to not only reinforce that knowledge but further enhance it. The manual may explain and list how the program works, but Seggern gives practical applications, often showing how one tool of the program relates with another. The book is organized well, with important information being highlighted in such a way that lets the reader know when to pay extra attention. His lucid and friendly style makes the book a joy to read - more importantly, he provides further instruction and demonstration for particular topics through Live 6 sets that can be downloaded. The final chapter offers some fun tips and tricks, the benefit and application of which only being limited by one's creativity. To sum up, I believe Ableton did a fantastic job with creating a simple, yet powerful program, and they wrote a user-friendly manual. However, being aware of features does not empower one to become a better musician; having a pragmatic knowledge is what helps to foster creativity and encourage work-flow. This is what Seggern does for the "newbie" and the experienced user. Making music should be as simple as being able to reproduce musical ideas in a quick and timely manner. Knowing one's gear well enough to not let it hinder an idea but rather develop and refine it should be the goal. Ableton Live 6 Power helps the musician/engineer/producer/dj accomplish this.
