not quite steel, nor a book, but SORT OF cool
the good? it's really kinda neato. the cover is nice - creepy hologram of the language of mordor, as inscribed on the the ring. it'll look cool on the shelf. 3 or 4 people you know might be impressed (maybe). the bad? it really does only hold the 6 discs containing the films, which must be removed from the original cases in which they're sold. no room for the standard packaging inside, nor for the 3 bonus discs with the 'digital copies' (which i never both with, anyway. so, it's pretty darned cool, but entirely non-essential. don't bother buying it from anyone who jacks up the price just because it's out of production or rare - it's not THAT cool. per the wrapping, it only cost $5 to begin with - so don't waste your time if all you want is the movies on blu ray.

although a paperback, a lovely edition in spanish
i'm very pleased with the book. it's a paperback, but of a heavy, solid paper, with a whimsical design much different than most versions. i highly recommend it.

an occasionally interesting side-note to a great career
erasure have done a number of truly acoustic tracks over the years, generally tucked away as b-sides to various singles, etc. and most of those have been fantastic. the problem with "union street" is that while commonly portrayed as an "acoustic" album, that's not really accurate. the songs are performed with a live band, but performed too often in a country music style that feels forced and false. there's no faulting the musicianship, nor andy's vocal performances, but from the sense of "country music role playing" to the bizarre choice of tracks, it's more of an oddity than even remotely essential. i adore erasure, and even adore most of these songs in their original forms - but a stripped-down, truly-acoustic album, with a broader sampling from the band's career would have been more welcome. if you find the curiosity too great, then by all means, check it out. it's not money wasted, but it's no work of genius, as some might lead you to believe. more interesting, perhaps, is the later-issued live recordings from the tour, "erasure - on the road to nashville." it features a live recording of the concert, as well as a dvd of the complete show and some behind-the-scenes footage. then set about finding the various single that have features a more interesting cross-section of truly acoustic erasure performances - with just andy's voice and vince on acoustic guitar. happy hunting!
