History of Newari Art and Culture
The city of Patan, Lalitpur is renowned for its fine artistry and richness of culture. The skill of manufacturing the extraordinary pieces of art work has been handed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years.
Metal statues and silver jewelry are traditional metal handicraft each piece handmade by today's Newar artists who are preserving the guidelines and techniques for centuries. Nepalese metal statues and silver jewelry are famous around the world for its authenticity, manufacturing process, fine carving and art work, traditional workmanship and high professionalism of the artists.
Metal statues are manufactured with the traditional technique known as Lost Wax method of Casting. This complicated job requires an artist's conception, proper technology, an engineer's perfection and the skillful hands of a craftsman.
Background of Newari Artists
“Newari” artists are the world class artists in making religious statues and jewelries. High class of skill required is acquired by these artists from their ancestors following the age-old designs and production technology.
They have been making a living out of this artistry for a long period of time since “Arniko” the great artist who happened to be “Shakya” artist from Okubahal, Patan, Nepal, introduced Newari Art in Tibet and China. Metalwork dates back to the seventh century AD in this region. Other collector from Tibet, China and western countries come here in Nepal specifically Patan to add these art and sculptures to their collection
