High Noon
A suspenseful tale of a town lawman, Gary Cooper, and town's people, who all discover that the bad men he and the town's people sent to prison for years, had their sentences shorted. Cooper is torn between enforcing the law and going away with his new wife Grace Kelly, or staying to see them in prison again. See, the bad men sent to prison are coming back to haunt him and the town's people for revenge, and Cooper must make the tough decision to either run away from the problem, or stay and enforce the law. as the clock on the wall ticks time away, he eventually loses support of people in the town, and his wife runs out on him too. Cooper plays the part of a tough as nails lawman, who is against evil doers, and struggles with difficult decisions he must make. the bad men, the miller brothers and their clan have nothing on their minds but murder and lawlessness. What is striking about this film is the camera catches the minutes ticking away on the wall clock, the gutless town's people who don't support his effort, as the suspense builds, Cooper has less than an hour to muster support, or take his chances alone, as he knows his wife is leaving him, because she doesn't understand his logic. The film is set in a dusty and dirty town, where it seems that nobody cares what happens. Familiar faces in this classic black and white film are of course the one's already mentioned, plus Lloyd Bridges (diver dan), Lee Van Cleef (the good, bad the ugly) Henry Morgan (mash & the shootist), many of these stars furthered their careers in many other movies. If you like old westerns, and enjoy suspense, you should see this old movie. Excellent direction and screenplay, and action.

Once Upon A Time Review
A must see western, a cast of stars, Bronson, Cardinale, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, Woody Strode, Jack Elam. What I liked about this old flick is that in the first 15 to 20 minutes of the film, 8 people are shot, but only 7 die. One who lives is Bronson, who goes on throughout the whole film trying to find out who are Cheyenne's men, and who aren't, and which are responsible for killing his older brother when he was a child. The story takes on twists and turns, and it's not til the near end of the film when you find out who played what parts in the demise of the few that died earlier in the film, which most were killed unnecessarily to begin with. Along with the 2 disk set includes parts of interviews from actors themselves, and where and how the film was made. Most of the territory filmed resembles New Mexico, or the great Southwest.

The Westerner
Walter Brennan plays self appointed justice (judge Roy Bean) west of the Pecos in a town named Vinagaroon, and is well know in the wild west territory as the hanging judge, even for minor offences. Gary Cooper plays the part of a wandering saddle tramp, who stumbles into Vinagaroon, and is arrested and charged with being a horse thief. Proof of this is the allegedly stolen horse identifying it's owner by nodding it's head when asked if he is his owner. Based on this evidence, and the fact that Gary Cooper was riding the horse, was enough for the judge to proceed with justice. This old western is so comical, it'll have you laughing at some point. The legality of judge Roy Bean's justice is laughable, as is his so called jurors who are no more than a bunch of druken card playing cow punchers. This movie gets to a more serious point of when Bean and his band of men destroy farmer's structures and spreads, because he and his men don't believe in growing corn or farming, or fences to keep cattle out. This must have been a ruthless time for cattle owners and for people who came west to try to farm the land. What is interesting about this movie is that it is partial fact. If you've ever seen Walter Brennan in some of his later movies, you'd noticed he really gained some weight. In this movie, he is remarkably thin, almost skinny. Great performances by all actors and actresses, great sceenplay and direction, set in a dusty and dirty location, as the west probably was, and still is in some areas of the west. If you like old black and white westerns, this is a memorable movie to see and own. In the end, the only thing that spare's Cooper's life from the hanging rope is their affection for the same actress, Lilly Langtree.
