Frightening book-Demon Seed
Storymeister Dean Koontz updated his original 1970's tale of the same name, to bring today's technology to the storyline, making it more believable... Susan Harris lives the life of a rich divorcee in her mansion protected by state-of-the-art security systems. Her fortress soon becomes her prison, however, as an experimental computer with artificial intelligence hacks into her home security computer system. As the hidden menace spies on the beautiful Susan through her own security cameras, taking complete control of the house, the nearly-human intellect of the invading electronic voyeur develops an infatuation with her, and hatches an unholy plot to imprison Susan in her own home for a terrifying "courtship"... The story is told from the point of view of the electronic antagonist, weaving a horrifying tale of an innocent woman caught up in a nightmare. With the advances being made in computer science each day, the possibilities brought out by this story become all too worrisome. Koontz has authored better books, but this one is still an unforgettable read. 4****

Thoroughly entertaining Eastwood western
Clint Eastwood returns to the Western genre after a 9-year hiatus, to produce, direct and star in "Pale Rider", a fine film with maybe some familiar qualities... This 1985 action drama has a greedy hydraulic gold mining company trying to run off a group of "tin panners" who have legal rights to their claims. By cruel bullying and threats, the evil mining company boss tries to get the group to give up and leave, thereby illegally grabbing their claims. Enter Mr. Eastwood, called "The Preacher" by the folks he helps. Here again, Eastwood's character is given no name and a mysterious background...but he proves himself up to the task of fighting off the mining company thugs and making things a little more equal. You will recognize quite a few aspects of the Spaghetti westerns as well as "High Plains Drifter" and possibly "Hang 'Em High" in this movie-but it carries its own merits as well, leaving you rooting for The Preacher and the underdog gold prospectors. Co-starring Michael Moriarty, Christopher Penn, Richard Dysart, Carrie Snodgress, Richard Kiel, and Sidney Penny. Rated R for intense violence and some language.

Paul Newman-comedian
I remember watching this hilarious movie way back in the '70's, laughing like a loon at the ridiculous goings-on, which, by the way, aren't TOO far from the truth... Paul Newman takes a comedic tack as Roy Bean, self-styled "judge" of Vinegaroon County, Texas. After being nearly killed by ruffians in a barroom/house of ill repute, Roy comes back to inflict stern vengeance on all the miscreants, both male and female (he kills them all). Claiming the now empty public house as his "courthouse", Bean then commences to dole out "justice" to all evildoers-without the benefit of a trial by jury-by the expedient of very public hangings. With the aid of former outlaws-turned-marshalls, Roy Bean gains great notoriety as the Hanging Judge. Sworn to serve "Texas and Miss Lily" (Lily Langtry, British actress and singer of the day with whom Bean was infatuated), and with the aid of a seldom-read outdated Texas law book, Bean's exploits become more and more strange, and hilarious. Though widely panned by critics after its release in 1972, it is nevertheless a great, tongue-in-cheek tour de laughs for most of us non-critics. Directed by John Huston (who has a bit part as Grizzly Adams), with Roddy McDowall, Ned Beatty, Victoria Principal, Anthony Perkins, and Ava Gardner as Lily Langtry. 5*****
