The Italian sports-car of typing machines
The Lettera 22 is my favorite ultra portable. Smooth typing and lightwieght with a very solid build.
This surprisingly has a basket shift which is much smoother than the carriage shift on most machines this size (when you push the shift key on a carriage shift, the whole carriage, roller/platen pushes up, then clunks back down afterward- the basket shift only moves the set of type bars).
Cautions with used Letteras - The cases often have the zippers torn around the back corners. The machine holds up well, though the rubber parts may need to be reconditioned or replaced, the draw bands on the older models are sometimes frayed and should be replaced. Also, as with a lot of poor typewriters...they may have been saturated in WD-40, which has now turned to plastic. Many sellers offer refurbished machines, it is worth the extra cash if you really want to use this thing.
