Martin Scorsese Presents: Val Lewton (DVD, 2008)
Great documentary produced and narrated by Martin Scorsese about the brilliant producer/writer, Val Lewton. Sadly, Lewton never thought his films were anything but simple B-movies, since RKO gave him such a small budget. However, being on such a limited budget sent his creativity into overdrive. He produced beautiful, mysterious, suspensful thrillers, loaded with psychological drama and beautiful use of shadows and light. Sadly, Lewton never saw the genius of his work. He saw himself as a failure, and died at age 46. Scorsese produced and narrated this great tribute to an amazing talent. I also highly recommend the 9-film boxed set of Lewton's work. Great for film students and those who appreciate artistry in the film business.

The Val Lewton Horror Collection (DVD, 2005)
This is a superb dvd collection, long overdue. Lewton was a brilliant writer/producer and visionary. His films are not really in the horror genre. They are psychological/suspense thrillers, and are loaded with mystery, symbolism, light and shadow. A great film collection! Sadly, Lewton never realized how great his films were, and thought of himself as a failure. He died when he was only 46. I also highly recommend the Martin Scorsese Documentary that goes with this set. Apparently, Lewton had a great impact on the Scorsese film SHUTTER ISLAND.
