The cheaper alternative
This is a DIY product. You can buy the complete canister with granules but it's more expensive. I've never had problems placing the granules myself, but the plastic transfer container always seems to eventually crack or crush. I usually end up taping it until the next order. The styrofoam plug is susceptible to breaking if you drive it in too deep, so don't get rough with it. The plug is necessary to keep granules from going everywhere you don't want them to. Do the granules work? I don't know. I always have scale dust in my bedroom. It all depends on your water and how often you change the granules. I change out every 3 months as recommended.
