There is no better portrait lens available today. The optics and IQ of the 85L are just superb and the results speak for themselves. When wide open subjects are in pristine focus and the bokeh is smooth and beautiful. The focal length is perfect for a full-frame camera (it might be a bit long for a crop sensor in which case the 50L might be a better choice) and the auto focus, if you use it, is fast enough for any but the most demanding studio settings. Manual focus is "drive by wire" and takes a little getting used to.
This was my lust lense from the first time I saw what it could do. I couldn't be happier with it.
