Afro Samurai, a classic storyline with a modern twist
I first saw some episodes of "Afro Samurai" on the Spike TV network that was run on cable TV in the U.S. in early 2007. I decided to buy the DVD because I found the episodes on TV very entertaining & wanted to see all of them. It was a smart buy, I love the title and quote the film all the time. For fans of traditional anime series, I think they will enjoy this title very much. I has a classic samurai storyline of a child growing up to seek revenge for his slain father. The title adds modern elements to the story, such as robots, cell phones, firearms, and other high tech "gadgets". Otherwise the story is set in fuedal Japan. There are several elements of western hip-hop culture in the film, namely the title character "Afro" & his side-kick, voices done by Samuel L. Jackson. If you are new to anime you may find this film appealing as well. I would recommend it to someone who liked the "Kill Bill" series or "Sin City". I bought the "unedited" director's cut version because I hate edited movies. This is a cartoon, but it is full of adult content, parents beware. There is violence, graphic bloodshed, and nudity. The director's cut has a bonus DVD with character interviews and project development stuff. If you want to full experience get the director's cut. Best of luck in your journey for the number one headband.
