Maine Coast Sardine History Museum
Sardines, neatly placed in those funny little cans, still are a common commodity found on most grocer shelves. Up through the mid 20th Century the odds were pretty good that the sardines found on shelves across the country came from the coast of Maine, and were processed in a Maine Sardine Factory. The Maine Coast Sardine History Museum strives to preserve and to share that history.
The Maine Coast Sardine History Museum is located in Historic Jonesport, Maine, which was home to many canneries, from small family operated to large corporate, such as Underwood. The museum currently documents the industry along the Maine Coast from Robbinston to Gouldsboro, and will eventually cover the entire coast down to Kittery. The exhibits include hundreds of photographs, original cans, labels, crates, and letterheads. It also includes original fishing, processing, and canning equipment covering the entire process from fishing, to processing, to canning to shipping. Come visit us this summer!
Business InformationHistory/background
We started selling on Ebay on March 31, 2004 as a way to work from home to fund our hobby and passion, The Maine Coast Sardine History Museum. In the beginning we sold mostly vintage labels for foods, medicines, cigars, etc. Next, at a moving sale, I happened on a vintage Saturday Evening Post with a Norman Rockwell cover. That was an exciting weekend with bids comming in like crazy! At first we were nervous about selling internationally. A very nice customer from Norway shepherded us along and there we were with our first foreign sale! We now have happy customers all over the US, Canada, Carribean, Europe, Australia and Japan.
